[Viola] "Time is a slippery devil. Our lives are sudden. They come and go, like.." (Cut to reveal LSP watching her; Viola is auditioning.) like a summer shower." [LSP] Oh my glob! You got the part! [V] (excited disbelief) Ah! I-I did? [LSP] Well not THAT part. You were terrible. But you /can/ be my personal assistant! [V] (unsure) Well.. I guess I have to start somewhere. (small smile) [LSP] Start with my laundry. (We hear Tree Trunks reciting her lines off-screen, her voice quietly filtering through the walls, as Viola washes LSP's clothes.) [Tree Trunks] (o/s) "Our lives are sudden. They come and go, like.. a summer shower." [LSP] (o/s) That was great! Well, maybe not /great/? But you /were/ a lot better than those others! (Viola's phone buzzes; she pauses and glances over at it - it's a reminder for her dinner date with Jake. She leaves the theatre and goes to Nutty's Diner. Jake is sitting at a table by the window; Viola knocks at the window when she sees him and waves, then rushes inside.) [Jake] Heyyy! [V] (at same time as Jake) Heeyyy! (They clasp paws, tails wagging) [J] Hey, Viola. [V] Hi Dad! [J] How's my big-shot actress daughter? Did you get that part you wanted? [V] Oh yeah, the part! (would-be casual voice) Suuure, I got the part.. [J] Well I think that's great. Just great. Seriously, that's so good to hear. Sometimes.. I wonder if maybe I haven't been the best dad. Maybe I blew it. But you gettin' that part? That makes my entire life seem worthwhile. (Viola makes unsure face.) You're great, kid! [V] Aww, you're great, Dad. (Her phone buzzes again; she pulls out and reads a text from LSP - "Where are you, girl?") (abrupt) D-Dad, I-I have to go. (like she's making up an excuse on the spot) I have a.. rehearsal. (They both stand and clasp paws again.) [J] That's cool. Go get 'em, kid! (Viola leaves, waving as she walks out; she pauses outside the diner.) [V] (sigh) ~~~ (Viola returns to the theatre; once again, we can hear Tree Trunks rehearsing in the background.) [TT] "I do hope that Nigel had no trouble at Chelmsyhead Station. There're /never/ any taxi cabs to be.." (Viola edges into the theatre, before being caught by LSP, who drowns out the rest of Tree Trunks' lines) [LSP] What have I found here? Is it a little mouse? (She grabs Viola's hand and pulls her to the front of the room, in front of the stage, where the cast of the play are gathered.) People~, look what I found, it's a little mouse! Everyone else is really a square, working together as a team, helping the author-slash-director... Everyone has that team spirit! Everyone except.. (She grabs Viola, shaking her) (suddenly angry) the SELFISH LITTLE MOUSE! [V] I'm sorry, I was- [LSP] (still angry) DON'T INTERRUPT ME WHEN I'M BERATING YOU! [Mr. Cupcake] (clears throat) When are we going to resume rehearsing? [LSP] Don't interrupt me when I'm berating my assistant for interrupting me! (stops shaking Viola) Unless you want some too.. [Mr. C] Well.. no. [LSP] I can't remember what I was saying.. Assistant, read me back my notes! (She hands Viola a notepad; Viola stares at it for a moment, then looks back at LSP.) [V] Hm.. Ah, you were wrapping it up so we could get back to rehearsal. [LSP] (clapping hands as she speaks) Okay, let's rehearse! (the play resumes) [Crunchy] "Mr. Cramforth will be drenched if he walks, to the cottage- from the station." [TT] "Poor suffering Nigel." Um.. [LSP] (o/s) "But he.." [TT] "But he is so awfully /amusing/." (We see Viola shaking a metal sheet backstage, to create a thunder sound effect. She then rushes up to Mr. Cupcake and throws a bucket of water at him; he then walks out onto stage.) [Mr. C] "Coming down like cats and dogs. Reminds me of the rain we had-" [LSP] (o/s) Too much water on the coat! It's not a hurricane. Again! (Again, we see Viola rushing around behind the set, but this time, she sprays a water bottle at Mr. Cupcake a few times.) [Mr. C] "Coming down like cats and-" [LSP] (o/s) That's too light! It's not a drizzle! Hey, Viola! (whistles) Viola! (whistles again - like whistling for a dog) C'mere girl. (whistling still) (Viola walks up to LSP.) C'mon. I wanna show you something. (She takes hold of Viola's hand and leads her out of the main theatre and onto the theatre roof.) I think it's gonna rain soon, so I'm gonna show you what *real* summer showers look like. And I want you to make little sketches of raindrops, as reference material. (LSP hands Viola her notebook.) [V] Do you really think this is worthwhile? [LSP] Yes!! (low-key frustrated) Guhh... How can I explain this as simply as possible..? (thinks for a minute) In my play, I don't wanna see big, big bloopy raindrops! And I don't wanna see teeny weeny tiny raindrops. What I wanna see is raindrops, that are just right! (smiles) [V] (slight pause) Neither too big nor too- [LSP] (annoyed) Stop interrupting me when I'm trying to explain things childishly!! (LSP sits on the edge of the roof) Every element of "Summer Showers" has to have /class/! You know what, I may be a princess, but when people meet me, they don't think (does air-quotes) "Princess". They think "Lumpy Space Princess". (Viola sits down on a nearby box, listening intently as LSP continues rambling.) I'll bet if I was Princess Bubblegum Buns or Sugarplum B-Buns Princess or something, things would be way different! (getting progressively angrier) They have absolutely no imagination, I'm the one who has imagination!! I'm the one who's special! I think my play will prove that. (sighs; suddenly sad) I've had a really crummy life.. Everything was okay when I was a little kid and I could just hang out by myself and make up little games. [V] (like a psychiatrist) Have you tried talking about this with anyone else? [LSP] (snaps back to being annoyed) No. It's part of your job! (It starts to rain; a light, summer shower, not a huge storm. Viola looks up, taking notice of the rain.) You're lucky it's starting to rain! Now pay close attention to these raindrops. (floating away) You should fill the whole sketchbook! I wanna see some classy raindrops on opening night! (LSP floats back into the theatre, closing and locking the door behind her; Viola watches her leave, then turns back to the sketchbook and begins to draw.) ~~~ [TT] "It's so good to see you, Nigel. Let Chelmsford take your overcoat." [Mr. C] "Very well, Tree Trunks~." [LSP] (o/s) Her name-! (The cast look over at LSP) Is Miranda Hobson!! [Mr. C] I don't know if I can call Tree Trunks by that other name. It seems... dishonest. [LSP] (o/s) (frustrated) Auuughhh... ~~~ (cut back to Viola sketching raindrops. She considers, then gets up and walks back over to the door and tries to open it, only to find that it's locked.) [V] (to herself, quietly) Hm. (She looks around, then teleports back into the theatre with her magic.) (In the theatre...) [LSP] (to Mr. Cupcake) This play is set in a country called "Eng-Land"! And in "Eng-Land", anyone called Tree Trunks (Viola appears behind LSP as she talks) is always called Miranda Hobson during the summer! [Mr. C] I didn't know that! [LSP] Yeah. (turns) So let's- (notices Viola) Woah! (floats backwards; surprised) How did you get here, I locked the d- (falters) Never mind. (floats closer) Have you finally figured out what rain looks like? (Viola nods; LSP turns back to the cast) Let's take it from the top! (Cut to Viola carefully applying "raindrops" to Mr. Cupcake's coat with an eye- dropper, before he again goes out onto the stage to rehearse.) [Mr. C] "Coming down like cats and dogs. Reminds me of the rain we had when Mother was still alive." (The cast all turn to look at LSP for approval.) [LSP] (long pause; considering) ...It'll have to do. (They grin; behind stage, Viola also smiles.) ~~~ (Small montage; everyone getting ready for opening night. Moving props, trying on costumes, folding programmes, etc.) [LSP] Still lots to finish! (v/o) Stay sharp! Keep it classy! Let's take it from act two! (Again, we see Viola backstage moving the sheet metal to simulate the sound of thunder, then we move to the main set; Mr. Cupcake and Tree Trunks are rehearsing a more romantic scene.) [Mr. C] "How lovely you looked this afternoon, Tree Trunks." [LSP] (o/s) Miranda!! [Mr. C] "..Miranda Hobson." [TT] "Oh, Nigel.." (cut to Viola dusting the seats in the audience; she mouths along with the second half of the line) (o/s) "You've always made me smile, even when we met (on screen) as children at the badminton tournament!" (o/s; again, Viola mouths along) "You were such a mischievious little boy." "And you still are." (TT and Mr. Cupcake kiss.) [Mr. C] (big yawn) (o/s) "I admit I feel *quite* sleepy." (Again, Viola mouths Tree Trunks' lines as she says them.) [TT] (o/s) "The summer showers always did affect you that way." "I'll let him rest. After all, the rain /can't/ last forever.." [LSP] That.. wasn't too bad, actually! (the phone rings from o/s, as part of the play) [TT] (o/s) "Yes, hello?" "Miranda Hobson speaking." [Citizen Peanut] (speaking quite fast) "Yes, Miss Hobson, you won't remember me, but my name is Wilfred. We met in April at the Chestnut Festival at St. Margaret's School. I'm between trains and I thought I might drop by." [TT] (to herself) "No visitors to Bulkley Cottage all season and now two in one day?" ~~~ (It's evening in the Candy Kingdom; opening night is finally here.) [LSP] (o/s) The doors open in an hour. (to the cast) Here's a pep talk. Tonight is your night to be special. Cause you're in a pretty darned special play - written by me. Directed by a pretty special director - also me. (o/s) Hey, Viola! [V] Yes, director LSP? (Tree Trunks walks into the theatre as LSP talks) [LSP] Where's our leading lady? (notices Tree Trunks) Oh, there you are. (Viola walks up to Tree Trunks and LSP.) What's the matter, you look like you're- gonna throw up. [TT] I'm going to have to back out of the play. [LSP] (angry) What! [TT] When I told Mr. Pig about the kissing scene, he didn't take it well. (flashback) [Mr. Pig] (freaked out) Kissing scene. K-kissing scene? (flailing) Kissing scene..!! (cut back to present day) [TT] (walks away) I'm dreadfully sorry. [LSP] You can't do this to me! Who else knows all the lines! (close-up on Viola) (o/s) Who else could possibly take your place in the eleventh hour and be a big hero?! [V] (gasps) [LSP] (excited) Viola! Your excited gasp just gave me an idea! /I'll/ play the part! (Viola looks down, disappointed) ~~~ (An hour later, we see various people - including T.V., Charlie and Jake Jr. - filing into the theatre and talking amongst themselves. Viola peeks out behind the stage curtain and into the audience; Jake, Lady Rainicorn and Finn are amongst them. Viola pulls away, looking excited.) [LSP] (to herself; warming up) She sells seashells by the seashore. (Viola realizes, thinks for a minute, then looks at LSP) She sells seashells by the seashore. (Viola, annoyed, has made her decision.) (clears throat) (spraying mouth spray) Aaahh.. [V] (quickly/in all one breath, same time as LSP) I'm so sorry!! (She zaps LSP with a teleportation beam, sending her away from the theatre; her mouth spray falls to the ground with a clatter. LSP reappears in the Ice Castle, momentarily oblivious, then she realizes. Ice King - who is lifting weights - stops, stares at LSP open-mouthed for a second, then blinks/squints a few times before pointing at her.) [Ice King] Are you really here or you like, ehp, an eye-floater? [LSP] (pissed; slaps away his hand) I've been usurped! (she floats away angrily) ~~~ (Meanwhile, back at Muffin Top Theatre, the play is in full swing, with Viola as the leading actress. Also Crunchy is holding a tray throughout this scene.) [Viola] "I can't believe this is our last summer here. But everything changes, I suppose." [Mr. C] "Ohoho, one thing hasn't changed. You've never looked lovelier!" (Crunchy flips up his tray; "Miranda Hobson" is written on the bottom.) [Mr. C] (takes Viola's hands) "...Miranda Hobson." (LSP continues to rush back to the theatre, angry/determined.) (Cut back to the play; Mr. Cupcake's character is sleeping, and another stagehand is filling in for Viola with the sound effects, etc.) [V] "I'll let him rest. (o/s) After all, the rain can't last forever." (LSP is in the Candy Kingdom by this point) (Cut back once more to the play.) [V] "How long have we been sitting here on the couch, Wilfred?" [W] "Ages and ages. But, not nearly long enough." (Jake is enjoying the play, whereas Finn is struggling to stay awake; meanwhile, LSP has reached the theatre and bursts through the front doors, growling angrily.) [V] (o/s) "One looks for a little brightness (on screen) to warm the days.. I thought that Nigel Cramforth had that (LSP silently floats into the theatre, still angry.) (o/s) brightness. But now I see that doesn't matter. (LSP's expression changes; she floats quietly into the empty seat next to Jake Jr. and watches the play, interested.) For you have a different kind of brightness. (on screen) A kindness that will always make the (o/s) cold ham and bitter rain of Eng-Land seem like hot tea (LSP is riveted; also, behind her, T.V. seems to be enjoying himself, too ^o^ Back on the stage, a spotlight is closing in on Viola; it's the final line in the play.) and sweet strawberry jam. And summer showers." (The curtain falls, and the audience claps politely.) [Jake] Woo!! (clapping excitedly) Viola! That's my girl! (He stretches multiple other hands/arms into the audience and claps fervently. On the stage, the curtain is raised once more, as the cast take their bow; they then all stand aside and gesture to Viola, who bows; they applaud her.) ~~~ (Behind the stage, T.V., Jake Jr., Charlie, and a couple of other members of the audience all chat amongst themselves. Also please look at T.V. here, he looks so excited and ughhh he's so cute. Meanwhile, in the dressing room, Jake, Lady, Finn, Mr. Cupcake and Crunchy are gathered around Viola.) [J] You were great, kid! [V] Thanks! But it's not as if I wrote the play. That was- (The door slams open o/s; they all turn to look at LSP, standing in the doorway.) [LSP] (serious) I should be mad. (pause) (happy) But you were so AMAZING!! [J] She's quite the actress! [LSP] What? No, the acting was fine. But the /rain/! (enthusiastic) It looked so REAL on the overcoats! (holding Viola's face) How did you do it?! (floats away) This play is gonna run for 20 years~! Aaa~hahahaha! (She leaves the dressing room; Viola and Jake chuckle together.) [V] That was my job, actually. (Jake turns to look at her, still smiling.) Putting (laughs slightly) raindrops on the overcoats. I only went on stage as a last minute replacement. [J] You mean you did the special effects? You're amazing, kid! [V] Aww, (laughs) you're amazing, Dad. (Cut to the outside of the theatre; people are leaving, some talking amongst themselves.) [J] (o/s) You're amazing. [V] (o/s) You're amazing! ~ THE END! ~
