Day 7: Wednesday 05 July 2023
New York
Here it is... our final day in New York. ;__; We were flying out at night, so still had most of the day to spend in the city though... but still had to get to the airport around 3 hours in advance, so didn't have that much spare time.
Two more pics of the hotel.
Mew had wanted to visit a Walmart while we were here, but the closest one was in New Jersey, and in the end we weren't able to fit it in. We didn't have time to see another show either... BTTF didn't have a matinee today (only an evening show, which we didn't have enough time for), although I'm not sure we'd have been able to fit one in anyway. So we decided to visit the big Macy's in Times Square instead.
They had this big TRU-themed entrance even before you got to the actual TRU section. Building up the excitement. ^_^
We stopped for a drink at the in-store McDonald's before we got to TRU itself. All of their cups are plastic in the US, rather than the paper cups we have in the UK.
It took a while for us to get served at McDonald's, but finally we got to Toys R Us! The TRU section here was MUCH bigger than the one we'd seen yesterday at the Queens Center Macy's. ^___^
There were so many cool displays and props, I wanted Mew to take my photo with all of them! See how many times you can spot me in these next few pics...
Mew: An amazing LEGO recreation of the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
This Schleich tiger was MASSIVE!!!!
Mew: A brief history of Toys R Us, and their mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe. I love stuff like this.
Geoffrey! ♥♥♥
They had a HUGE Lite Brite thingy on one wall that you could play with. Mew had fun making this heart ^_^.
Eventually we decided to explore the rest of Macy's.
Here I am re-enacting one of my favourite scenes from BTTF ^_^ "My myopia... Is my utopia..."
We looked at some clothes, and the "Macy's Backstage" section, before deciding to leave... there wasn't really anything else we wanted to look at there, and we didn't have much time left before we had to leave for the airport. Only, it turns out that getting out is harder than you'd think... the shop is SO BIG (it's the world's biggest store - at least according to the sign), it's like trying to find your way out of a maze! We were told this exit let out by Broadway, but when we walked out, we found that we had no idea where we were. Eventually Mew got a map working on her phone thingy again and we set off for the Winter Garden.
On the way there, Mew noticed a shop called Midtown Comics on the map. She remembered hearing about it before somewhere, so we decided to check that out.
Two whole floors of nerdy goodness! ^_^ You went up a flight of stairs into the shop itself. The first floor was all comics and books, while the second floor had more comics, as well as figures and some plushies, as well as this big pic of Spiderman.
Mew: The figures were mostly just superhero stuff, but they did have a section of second-hand figures, which is where the real treasures were kept. I was thrilled to find a Kenner Shimmer toy from the 80s there!!
Mew also got a HUGE The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck collection while she was in there, so spent the rest of the day hauling that around ^^; We left there and went through Times Square (which wasn't very pleasant)... visited Miniso (a shop that sold lots of anime and "kawaii" products) where Mew picked up a Pokemon keyring... and eventually we were back at the Winter Garden theatre, for our last visit :(
We had one last look in the Store. The online shop had added some cool floating pens, and Mew was hoping they'd have them in stock, but sadly they didn't, so she just got a scrunchie instead.
Mew: They had gotten new stock in of the time circuit plaques though; it was nice to finally see those in-person.
One last look...
We spent some time looking through pharmacies for some non-drowsy travel sickness medicine for Mew, which was surprisingly difficult to find! We knew it existed as we kept seeing adverts for it on the telly, but couldn't actually find any. Eventually we found one in a CVS (just one though!).
Mew: Me and Mum also bought matching "New York" keyrings from there. :3 I thought it was cute, and when Mum saw mine she said she wanted one too. We got some souvenirs for friends and family back home, too... actually, we got some yesterday as well, but I forgot to say that before ^^;.
Too soon, it was time to leave. We went back to the hotel to get our luggage and packed everything we had bought today, with Mew's big Duck comic book going in her backpack/flight bag, as there was no room for it in her case.
Mew: Plus there was no way I was letting it leave my sight, that thing was expensive! So I literally carried it all the way home on my back... luckily it wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be.
We got one last taxi and set off for the airport at around 6:30 pm.
